It Sounded Like a Good Idea After Wine

A funny thing happens after a couple glasses of wine. While I normally try to maintain a “can-do attitude,” my can-do becomes multiplied into “I’m an expert” proportions. Combine that with checking e-mail or cruising Facebook and it sometimes results in things I may question the next day. Nothing weird! Just an overblown sense of self-confidence that puts me in some interesting situations.

Like the time I got myself a promotions job that included driving a cargo van. I didn’t even know what exactly a cargo van was, but I figured it’s a vehicle, I can drive it. In case you haven’t tried to drive one, cargo vans are quite large and have no back window and they are hard as hell to drive through the crazy streets of downtown San Francisco, which is where I lived at the time.

And then there was the time I was like, “Sure, I speak Spanish,” and found myself working for Bacardi in Cancun for two months. Luckily, it was Spring Break and I think everyone was too drunk to notice my limited vocabulary. It’s amazing how you can get by on, “Yes, No, How much is that, and Where is the bathroom?”

My latest wine enhanced sentiment is that my kid and I are yoga buddies. I saw a post from a kid’s yoga clothing line about collaborating with bloggers and I immediately was like, oh we are so perfect for this! I must have blocked out the fact every time I try yoga at home, my son thinks I’m setting myself up as a human jungle gym.

I think we’re perfect for your fancy yoga line…

In my mind, I’m picturing him in the adorable fancy yoga kid clothes, doing a sun salutation alongside me while someone snaps amazing pics for my Instagram.

But here’s the real truth:

Me: You want to do yoga with mommy?

K: Yogurt?

Me: No, YOGA. (does some demonstration) Stretching!

K: Yogurt? Yogurt!

Me: Yooooooooooooga (again with demo)

K: Yogurt! Yogurt! Yogurt!

Me: *sigh* (go gets him yogurt)

So we are still working on this yoga thing. And I’m sure I’ll continue to blow my abilities out of proportion now and then. The positive thing is it’s good to push yourself and jump on new opportunities. I will say that I did learn to drive that van pretty well and that job led to several more promotions management positions. Also, it was a really unique experience to stay that long in Mexico, and by the time I left my sparse Spanish was actually pretty good. So sometimes it’s good to put yourself out on a limb.

But it’s also good to know your limits, especially if you are involving a kid who may or may not want to participate. I’d rather learn to drive a cargo van than work with a cranky toddler any day. Wine or no wine. (but of course no wine with while driving the van…ha!)

  1. Lol! When my son sees me get my yoga mat out he asks, “Mama, are you gonna play yoga?” He has his own yoga mat that he brings out too, though all he does is jump around on it. I like your cute yoga picture!

  2. You guys “doing yoga together” is so cute! Also probably insanely annoying at times. Lol. Recently I worked myself up so much about a class I was taking that I decided wine was the only option to power through this final, big assignment. I wrote my final paper after an entire bottle of red (after not having a drink for over a year mind you!). Looked at it the next day and didn’t even have to edit it. Whaaat? Got an A! Thank you wine!!!
