If It’s Dark at 5:30, Can We All Go to Bed Now?

The end of Daylight Saving Time has come, clocks were set back and suddenly it’s nighttime at 5:30. This is great news for anyone with a small child that insists baths are for when it gets dark, and can’t tell time yet so they have no idea you are getting them ready for bed hours early. The only problem is now I want to go to bed by 8 PM and when I tried to indulge that whim, I woke at at 2 AM and couldn’t go back to sleep.

It’s been dark out for hours, I’m yawning and ready for bed, but it’s barely 7:30. I was SURE it was at least nearly 9 PM. What’s happening??

I will admit that I’ve taken full advantage of the time change by sticking to our previous schedule as if nothing changed, and my son has been going to bed at least an hour early. (though technically at the same time as before) And he’s waking up now at the normal time, after a rough start when he woke up at 5 AM the first morning. I was at least able to convince him to go back to sleep because it was still dark out.

I was thinking I’d be able to take advantage of these early bedtime nights. That maybe it would give me a few extra hours to work with. But no…it’s been dark for hours so for some reason all I want to do is curl up with a book, read a bit and go to sleep.

I used to be such a night owl. Before having a kid, I’d stay up some nights until 3 AM, working on projects and getting things done. Now the thought of staying up until 3 AM is squashed by previous hellish experiences dealing with an exuberant child who wakes up full-throttle at the break of dawn. I just can’t do it.

I’m done, it’s dark, I’m tired ready for bed after another non-stop day of entertaining a four-year-old. Good night everyone! 🙂

So how many of you had kids waking up in the wee hours of morning for a few days? How’s it going now? Do you think we should end this Daylight Saving Time business?

  1. I liked the time changes well enough as a kid. As a parent they’re just dreadful. My oldest spent the first four years of his life (he’s 5) needing a whole week both times to adjust. It was excruciatingly painful and exhausting. This time I completely forgot about it until two days before, so I just pushed back their schedules by a half hour the day before and crossed my fingers. My 2 year old is waking up a little earlier than usual, but so far so good! Though this outdated idea really needs to go.

  2. I am with you…I’ve been in bed by 8 pm every night. As soon as I put the baby down I also retreat to my bed and it’s been lovely to just allow some relax time. However the baby has been waking up earlier so that hasn’t been as delightful lol
