Disney’s The Little Mermaid
I loved the original animated The Little Mermaid so much that I wore out my cassette tape with the soundtrack. And when you have strong memories attached to any movie, a remake comes with excitement and a little apprehension. Are they going to ruin it? Will they change the story? Will I like it?
I’m happy to say I liked the live action Little Mermaid movie more than I thought. There were a lot of changes, but not enough to make it a different story. I thought they did a good job bringing the characters to life. I wasn’t wowed by the new songs added, but they did a good job with some of my favorites from the original. They did change a few words to align with our current over-PC times, but it wasn’t a big change.
Before seeing the movie, I read a lot of reviews that said Flounder looked weird and that Ursula’s makeup could have been better, more flamboyant. I didn’t think Flounder looked that bad for a talking fish. And yes, they could have been a bit more over-the-top with Ursula’s makeup, but I still thought it looked pretty good.
The movie follows the same basic story- Ariel is obsessed with life on land, sees Eric, saves him, falls for him, makes a deal with sea witch, etc. They’ve beefed up the story bit to run longer than the animated version, and added a new twist where Ariel has selective amnesia about that all-important kiss.
It’s definitely worth a watch for any Little Mermaid fan!

Great review. I skipped this one when it was released in theaters because I’ve recently lost all faith in Disney’s live action remakes. The main issue with these films is that they always seem to be made merely for the sole sake of nostalgia rather than quality. All these movies manage to accomplish is reminding me about the original movies which are far superior. That being said, there have been exceptions. I loved “Cruella” because it offered a darker take on a beloved children’s character.
I loved Cruella too!
