Buying the Perfect Gift for a Ten-year-old Boy

Looking for the perfect gift for a 10-year-old boy? I’ll be honest and admit that I don’t know much about kids and have been learning everything as I go along. So, my child expertise (if you can even call it that) only lies within the age range of my son and his friends, which covers the 6 and under set.

Our Guest Geek post today ventures into unfamiliar territory for me and is all about finding the perfect gift for a 10-year-old boy. I’ll have to refer back to this post in a few years, when my son finally reaches the double digits.

Gift Ideas for 10-Year-Old Boys

If you’re looking for the perfect gift for a ten-year-old boy, but don’t know where to start, here are a few suggestions based on his interests.

The Bookworm

If the recipient is an avid reader, there are plenty of gift options to feed his curiosity. 100 Screen Free Ways to Beat Boredom will keep him entertained for a while, all without having to switch on a computer or tablet.

He’ll be having so much fun, he might not realize how much he’s learning, with activities such as growing an herb garden, turning a simple slice of toast into a work of art, or making and playing cookie checkers.

The Collector Type

For boys who understand the value of well-preserved, pre-loved items, it may be best to gift them a toy that appreciates in value, which they can sell in the future when life bumps into an unexpected curve. Moreover, this is good training for ten-year-old geeks on hunting and investing in potential gems.

You can check for shops like Tokyo Otaku Mode for limited releases. For pre-loved antique toys, try Senpai Mart. Both websites ship nationwide, so your orders will definitely arrive from Japan.

Trading cards are also a hot item for collectors. A mint-condition, rare Pokémon card from 1997 or 1998 costs thousands of dollars, so you’re lucky to see any of them in thrift stores and garage sales. For kids who love sports, NFL and NBA cards would be perfect. You can buy basketball cards in Australia if you can’t find the rare cards you want from US stores.

The Outdoorsy Type

If he prefers spending time outdoors, there are plenty more options for gifts he’s sure to love. A metal detector can give him the chance to spend time outside, and potentially find hidden treasure. You could try hiding a few coins in his garden to help him get started.

Another option is the Slimeball Dodgetag, which means he can play against a friend and try not to get slimed while getting exercise and fresh air at the same time. And if it’s one thing boys love, it’s getting messy with slime.

The Creative Type

If he has a creative streak, you can find the perfect gift to encourage his creativity. Fun With Harmonica is a CD that comes with a harmonica and teaches how to play. So, he can create tunes and develop a passion for music.

Or you can combine his creative streak with an interest in geography by buying him the world flags tablecloth. As he colors in the flags, he’ll be fueling his creativity and learning about the flags which represent different countries. Because the tablecloth can be washed, he can start again, remembering more each time. So, he’ll be able to impress his geography teacher and school friends with his knowledge of flags from around the world. It could even inspire an interest in traveling.

Shopping for the perfect gift for a ten-year-old boy doesn’t have to be a disaster. With a little research on the latest gifts and a hint or two about his recent interests, you can get a gift he’ll love.

Editor’s Note: It’s been several years since this guest post was posted, and my son is 9 now, so I went back looking for this post and it’s pretty lame, LOL. The best suggestion on here is the slime ball tag, which is something I haven’t seen before. If you have gift suggestions, feel free to add them in the comments!
