I recently got a bag of Nestle Toll House Caramel Morsels that look, smell, and taste like butterscotch. I’m so peeved about it that I’m writing a whole blog post about them because they changed the intended flavor of three dozen cookies!

The Caramel Chip Imposter
I was excited to try a new recipe for Salted Caramel Pretzel Cookies, which called for caramel chips. I got a bag of Nestle Toll House Caramel Morsels, expecting them to be caramel flavored, as stated on the bag.
I was suspicious when I first poured them out and they seemed darker than caramel and smelled like butterscotch. As these were the only thing I had, and I needed to make the cookies ASAP for a cookie swap party, I went with it.
I ended up with three dozen cookies that tasted like butterscotch. The flavor overpowered every other nuance of the cookies. I was so disappointed that I went to the website to leave a review and I saw they have one star, and every single comment was someone complaining about them being butterscotch.

I think there must have been a mix-up at the factory or something because that just isn’t right!
I’m going to find real caramel chips and do the recipe again. If you are interested in trying the recipe, you can find it here: Salted Caramel Pretzel Cookie Recipe
Just don’t get Nestle Toll House Caramel Morsels!
The Nestle Toll House Update:
After leaving a review on their website, I got the following e-mail:
Hello, Thanks for leaving us a review on our morsels and we’re sorry to hear that you found it to taste like butterscotch. This isn’t what we expect to hear, so we’ve let our team know. Please reply with the following:
Can you describe the taste?
Was the flavor different from what you were expecting?
Do you normally buy this particular flavor?
Was this just opened, or had it already been open for some time?
Did you notice anything else?

I replied back with all the details and am waiting for my complimentary coupons. I can still use them for chocolate chips at least! I know those are always good.
Nestle Tollhouse Responds
Nestle sent me a message saying how they love hearing how I used their wrong flavored caramel chips, and two coupons for free morsels, and one coupon for $1 off. I will use them, but you can guarantee I won’t be using these for more caramel chips!

False advertising has been a problem with food products for ages. It’s gotten worse the last few years though, particularly hiding everything under the label “natural ingredients”.
ah yes…and “natural flavors” as well, lol
I literally told my friend this earlier!!! I can always tell the difference (hate butterscotch, love caramel) and the second I opened the bag, I SMELLED butterscotch!! I went looking online to see if anyone else noticed this and found your page. Thanks for validating my thoughts!!
I felt so strongly about it I had to share, lol. Same here- as soon as I opened that bag all I could smell was butterscotch. Then it totally overpowered my cookies! I’m still waiting for my free coupons. At least I know their chocolate chips taste like chocolate.
Exactly the same!!! So annoyed. Will use them for Scotcharoos as the butterscotch chips 😢
I’m surprised they are still making them the same after all the complaints!
Definitely butterscotch! Disappointing
I’m wondering if there was some kind of factory mix-up!
