Stocking stuffers are often overlooked or just filled with random last-minute things picked up at the dollar store. One year my mom filled mine with grapefruits from our tree outside. (thanks mom!) Keeping the Stocking Stuffer Tradition Alive

The tradition of stocking stuffers originated in Europe, with the legend of Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century Christian bishop known for his acts of kindness and generosity. According to the story, Saint Nicholas dropped bags of gold down the chimney of a struggling family, and the gold coins landed in the stockings hung by the fireplace to dry.

In England, children began to hang stockings by the fire, hoping to find small treats or gifts inside on Christmas morning. In the United States, the practice gained popularity during the 19th century, with families adopting the tradition of placing small toys, candies, and trinkets in stockings.

Over time, this gesture has evolved into a widespread Christmas tradition and all over the world “stockings are hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon will be there.”
