Metalkitor: Metallic Artistry Inspired by Nature

Metalkitor began as a welding company in 2012 and later moved into the realm of DIY metallic artistry with the release of several unique building kits featuring animals, insects, sea creatures and more. Goddess of Light Steampunk Butterfly Kit

The Goddess of Light Steampunk Butterfly kit, which is part of their beautiful metal butterfly collection, comes with 200 pieces for the DIY route. I had mine sent already assembled and just needed to tighten a few screws with the little screwdriver included with the package.

It also has an optional gold base with delicate, golden-leafed branches at the bottom. (Kits are not normally assembled, this was just a special request for the blog post. The fun is putting it together yourself!)

The really neat thing about the base is that it is magnetic! So you can sit your butterfly on it and have its legs dangle or pick it up and place it wherever you would like.

The metal sculpture is based on the Blue Helena Morpho butterfly found in the rainforests of South America. Just like the real butterfly its wings are bright blue edged in black. The real butterfly’s vivid, iridescent blue coloring is a result of the microscopic scales on the backs of their wings reflecting light.

The blue morpho is among the largest butterflies in the world, with wings spanning from five to eight inches, making the sculpture life size! The wings of the butterfly are movable, and you can pose the sculpture in many different ways. The legs and antennae are also movable.

The butterfly’s metallic body is also based on a real butterfly featuring two clubbed antennas, two fore wings and two hind wings, six legs and three body segments consisting of the head, thorax and abdomen.
