Objects

Ensure you title each object appropriately so that it is searchable and easy to find. Provide each file with an ID. If there are multiple versions, assign it a number.

Buckets

Cloud storage begins with creating a bucket. Buckets are basic containers for data. From there, you can upload objects to the bucket. After uploading, you can download, share, and manage objects.

Storage Class

A storage class is a piece of metadata every object uses. What you choose will affect availability and pricing. When you create a bucket, you can specify a default storage class for each bucket.

Managed Folders

Inside buckets are ‘managed folders,’ which provide expanded access to groups of objects with a shared name prefix.

Projects

All buckets are assigned a ‘project,’ and projects can be grouped under an organization.

After creating a project, you can grant permissions for each piece of data to make it accessible only to authorized parties. This protects your data and ensures it is not publicly available via the URL. Use a strong username and password as your best security against unauthorized access.

How to Use Cloud Storage

Cloud storage maintains your data. You can scale it, run cost-effective analyses, and customize the file system according to your needs. You can invite someone to collaborate on a project with you. Simply provide them with a link if you want to share an individual file.

After storing your data in cloud storage, you can interact with your data warehouse using apps and plugins. From running analytics to deploying machine learning models, you can leverage data effectively.

Additionally, you can access cloud storage data in other applications. Sync and use cloud documents with a variety of applications. You can also access your data through an internet connection or a web browser.

Server-side encryption is often built into cloud storage, encrypting data as a default security mechanism. Add additional encryption with customer-managed or customer-supplied encryption keys.

Authenticate users, ensuring they have the proper credentials before granting access. Also, a retention policy should be defined that governs how long objects in buckets are retained before being moved or deleted.

Activate the ‘soft delete’ feature to prevent permanent data loss from accidental or malicious deletion. This will retain all recently deleted objects for a specified amount of time.

Scale Your Cloud Storage

Cloud storage is priced according to how it is used, its location and storage class, and how many gigabytes it has. A basic cloud storage package may be free and offer up to 5 gigabytes. For larger projects with big files, you will need more gigabytes. Ensure you scale your cloud storage to the correct size.
