Inside Out 2 Review: Get Ready for Teen Angst

The original Inside Out, released in 2015 by Pixar Animation Studios, captivated audiences with its heartfelt portrayal of emotions, memories, and the complexities of growing up. The film followed the inner workings of 11-year-old Riley’s mind, where emotions Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear navigated her world.

Inside Out 2 picks up where the first movie left off, with Riley entering her teen years and ushering in a new cast of emotions as Anxiety, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Envy enter her life.

Anxiety, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Envy

The plot centers around Riley’s struggle with puberty and the challenges it brings. When Riley learns that her best friends will be attending a different high school, Anxiety takes over, leading to a series of events that disrupt her emotional balance. Joy and the other emotions must work together to restore Riley’s sense of self before Anxiety completely overwhelms her.

And Anxiety does a really good job! As someone who suffers from anxiety, the film actually made me a bit anxious at times knowing exactly what it is like being in those situations when Anxiety takes over your brain.

The film explores themes of emotional growth, healthy expression, and the importance of understanding and managing new emotions during the teenage years. It’s a heartfelt sequel that builds on the original’s success while offering new insights into growing up

A little More Serious, but Still Fun

I feel like this movie is a little more serious than the first, dealing with new and more complex emotions. The movie itself is a rollercoaster of emotions. But it is still fun and funny at times, and relatable overall.

I wasn’t sure of my 9-year-old son would be into it, since it’s about a girl and her emotions, but he sat through the whole thing and enjoyed it. So, it appeals to a wide audience. He’s even watched it twice already.

And, although the movie can stand alone, I would recommend watching the first one before you see Inside Out 2, so you get to know Riley and her original emotions.

  1. An excellent review. I had a chance to watch this movie recently and really loved it. As someone with severe anxiety, I thought that it captured the emotion very realistically. I thought that the scene where Riley has a nervous breakdown was extremely well-done. It was very true to reality. I also loved the new emotions that were introduced such as embarrassment. Overall, an excellent sequel that could appeal to both children and adults alike. I thought it was Pixar at its best.
