Home to almost 40 million people whilst covering an area of approximately 163,696 square miles, California is the largest US state by population, and third largest by area.

Its nickname “The Golden State” refers to its historical connection with the 1848 – 1852 Gold Rush which led to a huge influx of fortune seekers when gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill, Coloma (approx. 50 miles east of present-day Sacramento). The news of gold brought almost 300,000 people across the Californian borders, causing a substantial impact on both landscape and economy.

In addition to its historical connections, the Golden State as it is more popularly known, is home to a plethora of golden poppies which were declared the official state flower in 1903.

But there are several reasons for people affectionately referring to California as the Golden State, not least for its beautiful golden sunsets across the Pacific Ocean and stunning natural beauty with exquisite waterfalls, contrasting snow peaks, and dusty desert tracks. With such an expansive area, there are a million and one things to see and do. Here are just a few of the most popular:

City by the Bay

It may measure less than 50 square miles and hold a population of less than a million, but San Francisco is one of the must-see places on the Californian map. For “adrenaline-fueled adventures, check out Hollywood’s Universal Studios with its thrilling rides, magical Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and Despicable Me Minion Mayhem. 

But if it’s the adorable world of Mickey Mouse and friends, head to Anaheim’s Disneyland for fantastical parades, light shows, family-friendly rides, and Disney-themed sweets and treats. City of Angels
