Home to almost 40 million people whilst covering an area of approximately 163,696 square miles, California is the largest US state by population, and third largest by area.

Its nickname “The Golden State” refers to its historical connection with the 1848 – 1852 Gold Rush which led to a huge influx of fortune seekers when gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill, Coloma (approx. 50 miles east of present-day Sacramento).
