Chambord is said to have helped inspire the castle we all know and love from Beauty and the Beast, and it’s easy to see why.

There’s no shortage of fairytale castles in Europe, but Neuschwanstein in Germany is hard to beat.

King Ludwig II of Bavaria commissioned the castle in the 19th century because he preferred a romantic haven inspired by medieval myths over the typical royal dwelling. And in 2025, Neuschwanstein was even added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Look out for the ruins of Dürnstein Castle, where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in the 12th century. Fans of Robin Hood will recognize this king, even though the castle itself wasn’t part of the tale.
