We are getting ready to go on our first cruise with a kid! It’s a 10 day trip on Princess Cruise lines and we are going through the Panama Canal. I’m so excited! We haven’t been on a cruise in a long time, maybe 10 years or so.
The cruise was a gift from Grandma. My grandfather passed away last year, and she wanted to get the family together. My half brother and sister will also be there, and I’ve only met them once before, several years ago, so it’s also a family reunion of sorts. (and that’s a story for another day, lol)
I thought it would be neat to commemorate the trip, so I had these cute ornaments made by PersonalizedOrnamentsForYou.com.

Smooth Sailing: Tips to Prepare for a Family Cruise
A family cruise promises adventure, relaxation, and quality time, but preparing for it requires thoughtful planning to ensure everyone has a great experience. From packing the right essentials to planning activities, here are key tips to prepare for your upcoming family voyage.
1. Research the Cruise Line and Ship
Different cruise lines cater to different audiences. Some ships are designed with families in mind, offering kid-friendly amenities like water parks, teen clubs, and babysitting services. Research the ship’s facilities, dining options, and entertainment to ensure it suits your family’s needs.
2. Plan Ahead and Book Early
Cabins fill up quickly, especially family-friendly ones with extra space or adjoining rooms. Book early to secure the best options. Look into any early-bird discounts or family packages that may be available.
3. Check Travel Documents
Ensure all family members have up-to-date passports if required. Some cruises also require visas for certain destinations, so verify the travel requirements for each port of call.
4. Pack Strategically
Pack with your itinerary and ship’s dress codes in mind. Essentials include:
- Clothing: Casual outfits, swimwear, formalwear for themed nights, and comfortable walking shoes.
- Toiletries: Some items, like sunscreen or diapers, may be expensive to buy onboard.
- Entertainment: Books, tablets, or toys for downtime.
- Medications: Bring any necessary prescriptions, seasickness remedies, and a basic first-aid kit.
5. Download the Cruise Line’s App
Many cruise lines offer apps to help you stay organized. These apps can be used to check daily schedules, make reservations, and stay updated on activities.
6. Plan Shore Excursions in Advance
Research the ports of call and decide which excursions suit your family. Some excursions may have limited spots, so booking ahead ensures you don’t miss out. For younger kids, consider less strenuous activities, while older children may enjoy more adventurous options like snorkeling or zip-lining.
7. Set a Budget
Cruises can include unexpected expenses like specialty dining, spa treatments, and souvenirs. Decide ahead of time what extras your family will indulge in to avoid surprises.
8. Prepare the Kids
Talk to your children about the cruise in advance to build excitement and set expectations. Share ship rules and safety guidelines, such as staying together in public areas and not climbing on railings.
Also, many ships have a kids club that you sign up for in advance. My son always loves the cruise ship kids clubs.
9. Pack a Carry-On Bag
Your luggage may take hours to arrive at your cabin, so pack a carry-on with essentials like swimsuits, snacks, medications, and anything you might need immediately.
10. Bring Snacks and Refillable Water Bottles
While food is plentiful on cruises, having familiar snacks on hand is helpful for picky eaters or between meals. Refillable water bottles are also handy for staying hydrated, especially during shore excursions.
11. Check Health and Safety Requirements
Some cruise lines may have specific health guidelines or vaccination requirements. Check these in advance and ensure your family meets all criteria.
12. Plan Some Alone Time
Many ships offer kids’ clubs or babysitting services, allowing parents to enjoy some downtime. Take advantage of these amenities to recharge and make the most of your trip.
13. Stay Flexible
While planning is key, being flexible is just as important. Weather, delays, or unexpected events can alter plans, so go with the flow and make the best of the experience.
A well-prepared family cruise ensures that everyone can enjoy the adventure. With thoughtful planning, you’ll be ready to create unforgettable memories on the open seas!

Sorry, I don’t have any tips for you but I do wish you a phenomenal time! We’ve never gone on a cruise but are thinking of going on the Disney cruise for my older daughters 15th birthday. It’s a few years away, so we hope to start saving soon. Haha! Because you know, the size of my tribe and all! 😏😂😊
I hope you have a great time! My parents do cruises all the time and always come back with funny stories. I guess a good solid tip I learned from their cruise adventures is to pack appropriately. I guess they took a trip to Alaska and my parents, who have only lived in hot climate, packed for Antarctica. It turns out Alaska is not as cold as they thought and had to buy light jackets during their trip which costs more for tourists if you end up having to buy them at a gift shop. LOL
I need to find out what the weather is like in Panama! I am just assuming hot lol. But that’s what I thought my first time in CA and I had to buy a tourist jacket 😆
