Pregnancy and postpartum are two critical times in a woman’s life where she can use extra support, encouragement and care. Sadly, much of this time is focused so much on baby, that mom’s needs often get lost in the flurry of adorable loveys, blankies and toys!
All the while, mom herself is stressing over every item for baby and herself, making sure she is creating the most nurturing environment for her new addition. And so, when gifting an expectant or new mom, stand out from the crowd and gift something that is just for her.
Thoughtful Gifts That Focus on Mom
Sending mom a luxury pregnancy and new mom gift box is a thoughtful way to comfort, pamper and celebrate her! Highly recommended items to include are self-care products like a (pregnancy safe) face mask, soothing eye patches, shower steamer, dry brush, and non-toxic candle.
These encourage mom to take moments of peace during her busy day. Other gifts that show mom you are thinking of her are those that help to luxuriate pregnancy and make her more comfortable, like cushy slippers and a super soft robe (also such a perk for the hospital).
It’s incredible what something as simple as a beautiful robe can do for the mindset of a new mom when she’s in the throes of 24/7 feedings, bottle cleaning and diaper changes.
Lastly, if you are close with mom, and you know she’s feeling particular discomforts, like heartburn, nausea or itchy dry skin, curative add-ons like heartburn-relief tea, ginger sweets and moisturizing belly butter can show her that you really listened.

When in Doubt, Ask Her What She Needs
And on that note, if you don’t know what mama needs, ASK! Perhaps the best gift you can give is asking her what she needs. Odds are, not many people have, and the simple gesture of asking her what she needs or how you can help will be so appreciated.
Respecting Boundaries During Pregnancy and Postpartum
During pregnancy and postpartum, it’s also important that you are mindful and respectful of mom’s wishes and boundaries. It’s a private time! And so, the number one thing to avoid is: surprises. That means no drop-in visits. Don’t worry, she wants to see you, but on her own terms.
Similarly, keep any bold opinions to yourself. Your advice or experience is a gift, yes, but unless she has asked for your advice on something, it’s best to keep any strong advice quiet until prompted.
Finally, you may think getting the “best stroller on the market” would be the ultimate surprise gift. But, chances are, she has her heart set on one already. And so, if it’s not on her registry, avoid these types of purchases.
The Bottom Line
The bottom line is during pregnancy and postpartum, when everyone else is focusing on baby, gift something that shows her you’re thinking about her. Listen to her and support her, near or far. Sure, an adorable stuffy can fit in the mix too, but create a suite of items that say “take time for YOU”.
