Our Geek of the Week this week is Lucy A. McLaren, a fantasy writer and author of Awakening: The Commune’s Curse Book 1, which is set to be released on May 1st, 2022.

Please introduce yourself:

I’m Lucy, a fantasy writer and lifelong geek. My writing has been inspired by my consumption of geek culture since I was a child, from fantasy books to video games, TV shows and films. It is undoubtedly because of my love of these that my first book, Awakening: The Commune’s Curse Book 1, is releasing on 1st May.

What do you geek out on?

Favorites include His Dark Materials series, Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Witcher, Legend of Zelda, and the Marvel cinematic universe. I love reading, watching and gaming as much as possible—though haven’t been able to as much since my son was born!

Do you have any children?

I have an 8 month old baby, who is taking up more of my time than anything else at the moment!!

Marvel or DC? and Why?

Marvel, as I love how the films have all come together and the storylines have linked up. It’s evident that there have been plans going back years and I admire that about the writers of the films and TV shows. I do love the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy though…

Star Wars or Star Trek? and Why?:

Star Wars, as I’ve seen more Star Wars content and enjoyed Star Wars video games. Star Trek I’ll admit I’ve never been gotten into!

Favorite video game now, or as a kid, or both if you are a long-time gamer.

Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask from when I was a kid—still love it to this day. Most recently, Red Dead Redemption 2 because that game drew me in and shattered me with the characters and storytelling.

Were you a geeky kid or did you come into it later in life?

Oh yes, 100%. I’ve loved games and reading for as long as I can remember!

Have you ever cosplayed as a favorite character?

No but I would love to at some point. I enjoy dressing up, I just don’t have the patience for putting together a highly detailed outfit. I admire those who do though, I’ve seen some amazing cosplays!

What is your favorite geeky event you’ve attended or would like to go to?

I went to London Comic Con a few years back with my husband for our anniversary and would love to go again, especially once my son is old enough to appreciate such things!

Are you working on anything right now you’d like to share or promote? :

My debut YA fantasy book, Awakening: The Commune’s Curse Book 1, is releasing on 1st May. It’s a multi-POV story including an authoritarian cult, a rebel cause, found family, animal companions and ancient powers.
