By Nappers, For Nappers

Created by two innovative college students driven by a quest for the ultimate napping experience, Plufl is a groundbreaking concept that takes dog beds to a whole new level – with humans in mind! Plufl combines luxurious comfort with ample space to ensure the perfect portable resting spot.

Measuring approximately 68 inches (172 cm) in length and 33 inches (82 cm) in width, this impressive human dog bed offers a spacious haven for you to unwind and relax. Children (and dogs) can fit completely inside and adults can fit curled up or with feet propped up on the sides.

The Plufl features 360° pillow bolsters that remind me a lot of my favorite pregnancy pillow. The cover is an ultra-soft faux fur that comes in four colors: arctic grey, blush, charcoal and biscuit. My pillow shown is in arctic grey. The bottom is firm yet soft, made with memory and orthopedic foam.

If you need to store the Plufl, you can fold it in half and secure it with the strap provided. They also provide you with a bag in case you need to customize the pillow bolsters by removing some stuffing. You can save it in the bag in case you want to put it back in later.

So What’s It Like Napping in a Giant Dog Bed?

We set up the Plufl when friends were visiting for a few days and at some point everyone had to take it for a test nap. My first experience went like this: I lied down and flopped around a bit trying to get used to the side pillows and find a comfy spot. I wondered if I needed to get a pillow. I started wondering if the fur cover was going to be too hot.

And then I woke up 20 minutes later.

I totally fell asleep! Immediately the Plufl naps became my new favorite thing. It really is super comfy. Another added benefit is that my son likes it so much, he’s started sleeping in it. And he sleeps all the way through the night, where usually he wakes up between 2-4 AM and crawls into our bed every night. The Plufl has been a hit with everyone who’s tried it! (including of course, our dog Tigger)

Why Plufl? Because Naps Are Good For You!

Napping is a scientifically proven way to boost your energy, mood, creativity, and productivity. It is a natural part of our circadian rhythm, which is the 24-hour cycle that regulates our sleep and wakefulness. Around mid-afternoon, most people experience a dip in their alertness and energy levels, which makes them feel sleepy and less focused. This is also the time when our body temperature drops slightly, signaling that it is time to rest.

You can help counteract that afternoon slump with a nap, which provides a short burst of restorative sleep that refreshes the brain and body. Napping can also enhance memory consolidation, which is the process of transferring information from short-term to long-term memory. This can improve your learning and problem-solving skills.

Napping can also reduce stress and lower blood pressure by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for relaxation and digestion. This also reduces the levels of cortisol, which is a hormone that causes stress and anxiety. Napping can also boost your immune system by increasing the production of cytokines, which are proteins that fight inflammation and infection.

The Best Practices for Napping

To get the most out of your naps, you need to follow some guidelines that optimize the timing, duration, and environment of your naps.

  • Time your naps according to your sleep schedule. The best time to nap is usually between 1 pm and 3 pm, when your circadian rhythm naturally dips. However, this may vary depending on when you usually go to bed and wake up. A good rule of thumb is to nap about six hours after you wake up or eight hours before you go to bed.

  • Limit your naps to 10-30 minutes. This is the optimal duration for a power nap that boosts your alertness and cognitive performance without causing grogginess or interfering with your nighttime sleep. Longer naps can lead to sleep inertia, which is the feeling of confusion and disorientation that occurs when you wake up from deep sleep. Longer naps can also reduce your sleep drive at night, making it harder to fall asleep or stay asleep.

  • Find a comfortable and quiet place to nap (like a Plufl). You want to minimize any distractions or disturbances that could interrupt your nap or affect its quality. Choose a dark, cool, and quiet place to nap, such as your bedroom or a couch. You can also use earplugs, eye masks, blankets, or pillows to create a cozy and relaxing environment. You can also play some soothing music or white noise to mask any background noises.

  • Set an alarm or use a nap app. To avoid oversleeping or missing important appointments, you should set an alarm or use a nap app that wakes you up at the right time. Some nap apps use smart algorithms or sensors to monitor your sleep stages and wake you up at the optimal point in your sleep cycle. You can also ask someone to wake you up or schedule a phone call or meeting after your nap.

  • Drink some coffee or tea before you nap. This may sound counterintuitive, but it can actually enhance the effects of your nap. Caffeine takes about 20-30 minutes to kick in, so if you drink some coffee or tea right before you nap, you will wake up feeling more alert and energized. This is because caffeine blocks the action of adenosine, which is a chemical that builds up in your brain during the day and makes you feel sleepy.

Go Take a Nap!

If reading all this made you sleepy, I highly recommend checking out the Plufl and making napping part of your regular routine.
