I take almost all my own cosplay photos and most of them are done in a little corner of our TV room. I’m sharing my selfie studio set-up and lighting for those wanting to take their selfie shots to the next level.
You can set up your own little selfie studio at home using lights, a tripod and a remote. My set-up uses an iPhone 12 Pro, but you can do this with any phone or camera with the ability to connect to a Bluetooth remote.
Selfie Studio: Lights, Phone, Action!
If you get only one thing for your selfie photo lighting, make it a ring light. It makes a HUGE difference! They come in many sizes, and I started with a small one, but really like the extra-large one I use now. It can light my whole upper body vs. just my face.
The one in the photo above is by EOTO Light and has three light settings with dimming options. Click here to find it on Amazon. It also has holders for three phones, but I’ve only ever used one. It also has a camera attachment for the tripod, so you can use it for traditional photography as well.
Whichever ring light you choose, make sure it comes with a remote! This will connect to your phone, so you can take your own photos with a click. This is WAY easier than trying to use the self-timer settings.
Additional Lighting: Soft Boxes
If you want to more lighting options, soft boxes are a great for providing soft filtered light. I use them to fill in the dark areas the ring light doesn’t reach. You can even start with just one, but I got the set of two for even lighting. I often use these without the right light when I don’t want those light circles in my eyes in every photo.
The ones I got are pictured below and are by Mount Dog. They were very affordable ($60 for both!), easy to set up and use. I haven’t had any issues with them, and they provide great lighting. Click here to find these lights on Amazon.
They are also lightweight and easy to move around the house for different lighting set-ups.
So, whether you are taking photos for modeling, cosplay, or lighting a product, this light combo is versatile and easy to use. It makes it easy to set up a little photo studio anywhere in your house!
