Movie Review: The Marvels

We watched The Marvels last night, and it felt a bit like being dropped in the middle of the Marvel Universe with no clue what was happening. If you want to be up to speed with The Marvels, you’ll need to first watch Captain Marvel and the spin-off TV series Ms. Marvel. And it wouldn’t hurt to watch WandaVision either!

As it had been a while since I’d seen any of those, I felt kind of lost and just grasped bits of information. This is a movie aimed at Marvel fans who can recall all the details of previous films.

Marvel Studios’ The Marvels now Streaming

Marvel Studios’ The Marvels became available on all major digital retailers including Prime Video, Apple TV, and Vudu on January 16 and will be out on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on February 13.

It includes exclusive bonus content including deleted scenes, a gag reel, behind-the-scenes featurettes and an audio commentary from co-writer/director Nia DaCosta and VFX Supervisor Tara DeMarco.

What is The Marvels About?

In “The Marvels,” Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel, embarks on a mission that leads her to encounter a peculiar wormhole, intertwining her powers with those of enthusiastic fan and budding superhero Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel), as well as Carol’s estranged niece, astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Despite their differences, the trio must unite and collaborate to avert a universal catastrophe. The movie takes viewers on a cosmic journey, exploring the dynamic relationships and challenges these characters face in their quest to save the universe.

The film delves into Marvel’s first-ever musical number, providing a behind-the-scenes look at the production in featurettes. Additionally, viewers can enjoy moments from the vibrant set in “The Production Diaries,” along with amusing outtakes in the gag reel. Deleted scenes offer further insight into the characters’ interactions and experiences, including unexpected switches, brainstorming sessions, yoga lessons in space, and tension-filled chases. The bonus content reflects the lively and multifaceted nature of the film, providing a deeper understanding of the Marvel Universe and the unique dynamics at play in “The Marvels.”

My Personal Review

I think I covered most of my feelings about the movie in the first couple paragraphs. It felt like one long episode of Ms. Marvel. I highly recommend watching Captain Marvel and at least the first two or three episodes of Ms. Marvel so you can understand what’s happening and why.

The movie was cute, humorous and entertaining. It seemed a bit more aimed at girls or a younger audience, as my husband made a lot of groaning/grunting noises as commentary throughout movie. My son was much more entertained, and he didn’t even remember much about the previous movie. I spent a lot of time looking things up on my phone to remind me who was who and how they fit in the Marvel Universe.

  1. thanks for the honest review. I have been wondering. I’m a big Marvel fan but that exciting feeling hasn’t been there for the Marvels movie.

    • For what it’s worth, and I had to read ALOT of reviews and comments to piece it all together, the movie isn’t great but it’s not half as bad as some have said. The movie got hit with a barrage of “woke” accusations strictly because it had female protagonists.

  2. Your feelings are getting to be a commonly voiced frustration with the MCU. The big problem, as you know, is that for decades, comic books have worked on a crossover model to help drive sales. If you REALLY want a complete picture of a major event, you have to buy every book Marvel or DC makes. Thus Marvel sees nothing wrong with doing it in the movies also.

The movie itself… I haven’t seen yet. From what I gather reading between the lines, alot of the “woke” garbage accusations regarding the film are either just that (garbage) OR fans taking out Danvers’ comics portrayal on the movie. The only valid criticism I heard along those lines is that all 3 women had zero issue jumping between bodies all the time. IF true, that’s the same kind of effortless expertise that ruined Rey’s character in the Star Wars sequels. Characters need a learning curve and growth as part of their story.

  3. Thanks for your honest review. I skipped this one when it was released in theaters and am kind of glad that I did so. I’ve long lost faith in Marvel movies which have lost their abilities to captivate me. The problem as you mentioned in your review is that you have to be familiar with multiple characters, stories, etc. The last Marvel movie that I enjoyed was “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” two years ago.
