Protect Your Hair from Summer Stress

Summer is a time for swimming, beach trips, and outdoor adventures. However, the season’s heat, humidity, and exposure to UV rays can wreak havoc on your hair, leaving it dry, brittle, and damaged, so it’s a good time to take extra steps to protect your hair.

We deal with this year-round here in Florida, but it really ramps up in the summer! Taking care of my hair sometimes feels like a part-time job, but it’s worth the effort to not end the summer season with a head full of brassy straw-like hair.

To keep your locks looking their best all summer long, follow these tips to protect your hair from summer stress and lessen the damage from all that fun in the sun.

Protecting Your Hair from Summer Damage

Shield Your Hair from the Sun

The sun’s UV rays can cause significant damage to your hair, making it dry and prone to breakage. Protect your hair by blocking the sun exposure with a large hat or scarf when you are out in the sun. A wide brimmed straw beach hat will keep you cool and protect your hair at the same time.

Sunscreen for Your Hair

You use sunscreen on your skin, so why not your hair? Many hair products now incorporate UV filters. A leave-in conditioner with sunscreen does double-duty conditioning and protecting.

Rinse Before and After Swimming

Most people know to rinse their hair after swimming but getting it wet BEFORE you go in the water actually helps as well! Wetting your hair before you swim helps create a protective barrier. When your hair is already saturated with clean water, it absorbs less chlorinated water.

Chlorine from pools and saltwater from the ocean can strip your hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness and damage. Always rinse your hair with fresh water immediately after swimming to remove any chlorine or salt. Consider also applying a leave-in conditioner before swimming to create an extra barrier between your hair and the water.

Wear a Swim Cap

Wearing a swim cap can protect your hair from excess exposure to chlorine and salt. However, your hair will most likely still get wet when wearing a swim cap. A great option is to wet your hair and add a deep conditioner before you put your swim cap on.

Avoid Excessive Heat Styling

The summer heat is already putting stress on your hair, so try to minimize additional heat styling. Limit the use of blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons, which can cause further damage.

Embrace your natural hair texture and opt for heat-free styling methods like braids, buns, or twists. This is a good way to take advantage leave-in conditioners with UV filters.

Get Regular Trims

Regular trims are essential for maintaining healthy hair, especially in the summer when sometimes it seems your hair is growing faster. Trimming your hair every 6-8 weeks helps to get rid of split ends and prevent further damage. Keeping your ends healthy will ensure your hair looks vibrant and fresh throughout the season.

Use a Wide-Tooth Comb

Wet hair is more susceptible to breakage, so be gentle when detangling it. Use a wide-tooth comb instead of a brush to gently work through knots and tangles. Start from the ends and work your way up to minimize damage and reduce breakage.

I find it’s easiest to comb and detangle in the shower, after applying conditioner and before rinsing. It’s much harder to detangle if you wait until you are out of the shower.

Deep Condition Regularly

Summer is the perfect time to pamper your hair with deep conditioning treatments. Use a deep conditioning mask once a week to nourish and repair your hair. Look for masks with ingredients like keratin, argan oil, shea butter, and castor oil from amazon, which provide deep hydration, promote growth, and strengthen your hair.

Make the sun work for you next time you know you’ll be outside for a bit, by slathering your hair in deep conditioner or castor oil. Let the sun heat it up to increase the penetration and protect your hair at the same time.

Embrace Protective Hairstyles

Protective hairstyles like braids, twists, and buns can help minimize exposure to environmental stressors and reduce the need for frequent styling. These styles not only protect your hair but also give you a chic and stylish look perfect for summer.

But don’t do them too tightly! Tight ponytails, braids, and buns can put stress on your hair and scalp, leading to breakage and hair loss. Opt for looser version of these styles that don’t pull on your hair and scalp. If you do tie your hair back, use soft hair ties that won’t cause damage. (no rubber bands!)

Protect Your Hair While You Sleep

And finally, after protecting your hair all day, you can continue to protect it as you sleep by using a satin or silk pillowcase, which causes less friction on your hair compared to cotton pillowcases. This helps reduce frizz and breakage. Additionally, you can wrap your hair in a silk scarf or use a satin bonnet to protect your hair while you sleep.

By following these tips, you can enjoy all the joys of summer without compromising the health of your hair. With a little extra care and attention, you can keep your locks looking gorgeous and stress-free all season long. So, go ahead and enjoy the sun, but don’t forget to give your hair a little extra attention this summer season.
