Winter 2025 Accessories Anti Trends (and What to Wear Instead)

winter accessories

2024 is almost over, and so are the many fashion trends that defined it. What once dominated winter fashion is now begging for a rest, and thankfully, their replacements are just as practical but far more exciting. If you too plan on rethinking your winter wardrobe before the New Year is here, here are the accessories you’re better off avoiding, and what to wear instead to stay cozy, confident, and stylish.

Bulky Blanket Scarves

Remember when blanket scarves were everywhere and Lenny Kravitz went absolutely viral for walking around in his giant brown scarf? Sure, they were warm and they’ve definitely had their fashion moment, but they’ve started to feel less like a statement and more like an afterthought from 2016. This winter, there’s no need to wrap yourself in yards of fabric, only to spend all day wrestling with it slipping off your shoulders or drowning out the rest of your outfit.

What to Wear Instead: Sleek knitted neck warmers and structured wool scarves are the new talk of the town. These accessories are a much smarter option than the blanket-like scarf, and they provide the same warmth, but without the hassle.

Faux Fur Bags

It’s easy to see why so many women were mesmerized by faux fur bags a few years ago: fur is the epitome of winter luxury, and even the faux kind could be used to bring more texture and, why not, fun, to the outfit. Lately, however, these bags started to feel outdated, with the fuzzy texture clashing with winter coats, getting easily damaged when faced with rain or snow, and having that cheap, synthetic shine that ruined even the most put-together look.

What to Wear Instead: If you still want an interesting bag that wouldn’t be made of leather, Irish tweed bags are the perfect upgrade for you. These purses are durable and sophisticated, and the rich texture of tweed complements winter outfits beautifully. Tweed purses also come with leather accents or metallic hardware, and the wide range of colors will make choosing the perfect one an extra easy process.

Shapeless Puffer Jackets

If you live in an area with extremely cold winters, biting winds, and bone-chilling snowstorms, then puffer jackets are indeed an absolute must for you. Otherwise, there’s no reason for you to look like the Michelin Man in a shapeless jacket that swallows up your silhouette and ruins the entire look.

What to Wear Instead: Instead of getting yet another 2016-inspired outerwear piece, look for tailored coats with defined waists or structured parkas. Belted wool coats or trench-style puffers can give you the insulation you need and create a more flattering shape at the same time, so you can stay just as warm without all the extra bulk.

UGG Boots (For Everyday Wear)

This one truly hurts to admit, but the iconic Ugg boots seem to be losing their relevance. A decade ago, these boots were the ultimate go-to for winter footwear, and while they are undeniably cozy, they also feel chunky and straight up old-fashioned, especially if they’re paired with leggings and oversized hoodies for the fifth day in a row. Don’t worry, you can still wear your cozy pair, just don’t combine it with literally every single outfit and spice things up every once in a while.

What to Wear Instead: Leather combat boots and chunky loafers have taken over the fashion world. Unlike Uggs, they are much more practical, have a better grip for icy sidewalks, and can be beautifully combined with more polished outfits like knit dresses, wool overcoats, and slim quilted jackets.
