Return of the King
Mufasa: The Lion King is directed by Oscar® winner Barry Jenkins and features a vibrant new score by Lin-Manuel Miranda—including the breakout hit “I Always Wanted a Brother”. I thought the songs were decent, but of course it’s really hard to beat the catchiness of Hakuna Matata!
Still, Mufasa has managed to captivate viewers and critics alike. The film earned over $700 million worldwide, landing a spot among the top 10 global box office hits of 2024.
Hailed as “visually stunning,” “dazzling,” and “adventurous,” Mufasa: The Lion King has been praised for its emotional storytelling, unforgettable soundtrack, and cinematic grandeur. As Pete Hammond of Deadline Hollywood raved, “It’s a bold reimagining that honors the original while standing proudly on its own.”
I liked it more than I thought I would! The graphics were really well done and very realistic. And the story draws you in.

Mufasa: The Lion King Film Synopsis
Told through the wisdom of Rafiki, Mufasa: The Lion King follows the untold origin story of one of Disney’s most iconic kings.
As he shares the legend with young Kiara—daughter of Simba and Nala—audiences are transported into a tale of resilience, destiny, and the bonds that shape a leader.
Through flashbacks, we meet Mufasa as a lost, orphaned cub whose path crosses with Taka, a royal heir with secrets of his own. Together, they embark on a journey of friendship, courage, and discovery as they confront a deadly threat and forge a future neither could have imagined.
You also get to find out how Scar got his scar, his name and how he became the way he was. It’s an origin story for both lions!
It’s a good choice for family movie night, and you can now find it on Disney+ and all streaming platforms.
