What the Deal with Omega-3 Fatty Acids?

The Omega-3 nutrients you get from eating fish are essential to a healthy diet. Fish oil provides two essential omega-3 fatty acids: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). They can help to support and maintain healthy brain function, eye health and nervous system health. They also support brain development and learning, as well as healthy behavior and temperament in some children. The American Heart Association recommends eating fatty fish at least twice per week to ensure optimal omega-3 intake. But what if your child hates eating fish? A New Way to get Omega-3 Nutrients

Many kids are picky eaters, mine included. It’s struggle to get him to eat healthy things and have a balanced diet, so I make sure he takes a vitamin daily. It’s much easier to get kids to take vitamins when they are fun and flavored. The Kids Smart High DHA Fish Oil comes in the form of a fruity flavored fish-shaped capsule they call a “chewable burstlet.” It can be chewed to make them burst, or snap the tail off and squirt it into drinks or food. You can also squirt them directly in your mouth. Each package contains three flavors: black currant, strawberry and orange.

Kids Smart Fish Oil contains the highest amount of DHA fish oil (133 mg) available on the market- up to 10x more fish oil than other children’s fish oil supplements and equal to about eight gummies. Each burstlet contains 500mg of natural fish oil overall, so it only takes one or two per day to get your recommended dose!

For our first taste-test, we tried biting into them and it immediately reminded me of my favorite Freshen Up gum from the ’80s. (the way it squirt, not the taste) I used to love that stuff! Unfortunately my four-year-old did not like the squirting effect and immediately spit it out. I do think the squirt delivery might be a neat novelty for slightly older kids. Also, in complete transparency, we did not like the taste. My son doesn’t ever like anything, so I wasn’t surprised, but I was hoping maybe I’d want to take them if he didn’t. But there’s just no denying the fish oil taste and smell is there. Just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke, I tried each of the three different flavors and found it to be the same with each one.

I did read a lot of reviews that said they couldn’t taste anything, so I recommend trying it for yourself! I could just be a little sensitive to the taste. I’m going to try mixing into my son’s yogurt next, which is one of the recommendations I read in the other reviews.
