I haven’t done a lot of the WordPress writing prompts, but this was the one for today and I figured I’d take a moment to participate and answer! So why do I blog? There are many reasons!
Blogging Helps You Connect
My blog started nine years ago as an anonymous IVF blog, because going through IVF was incredibly tough and lonely when you don’t know anyone else going through it. Blogging was a way to connect to a lot of other women going through the same thing. It was incredibly helpful through the whole experience. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to continue blogging with a public mom blog.
Writing is Therapy
Mom life ended up being way tougher than expected. My son was a very active alert baby and a little monster of a toddler. Seriously, his nickname and gaming handle now is Lil Monster K. Writing about it helped me decompress after a long day of tantrums and just trying to keep it together. I tell people the first two years of this blog are mostly just me complaining about how awful toddlers can be.
Writing has always been therapy for me. Sometimes stuff just gets stuck in my head, and I can’t stop thinking about it and writing is a way for me to “head dump” all the junk that’s rattling around. I feel so much better after writing things out.
I Get Paid for Doing Something I Love
It didn’t happen for a couple years at least, and I wasn’t even trying to turn it into work, but eventually companies started paying me to write reviews on my blog or submit guest posts. And it was maybe five years before Word Ads paid me more than a few cents a month! (seriously, Word Ads is probably the worst for ad revenue, but it’s also the easiest and least invasive so I continue to use it)
Now the blog easily pays for itself and more. In fact, it became a full-time job along with content creating for social media. I love writing and getting paid to do it.
I’m Helping People
I started blogging for totally personal reasons, so this aspect of blogging was something I just fell into. I kept getting targeted by scammers and some of them were pretty good. Every time I’d Google to check a scam, nothing came up. That’s when I decided to start sharing Internet scams and letting people know exactly what happens with each one and what to look out for. Those posts are still the most popular posts on the blog today, particularly the ones about the Instagram mural scam and the SHEIN collab scam.
I Love Writing
I’ve always been a writer ever since I learned how to write. I started keeping a journal at six years old. I wrote all through high school and college, where I was on the school paper. I went to the University of Florida and graduated with a degree in journalism. Writing has always been a part of me, and I love it, so blogging is something that I look forward to doing every day.
