Movie Review: The Creator

The Creator, a visually stunning sci-fi action thriller streaming now on digital, is like a mix of Terminator and Blade Runner with a dash of Apocalypse Now. It’s the year 2065 and there’s an all-out war against all AI due to them being blamed for blowing up Los Angeles with a nuclear weapon. But did they really do it?

The Creator

The stunning visuals and big-budget special effects were pretty impressive, but the story was a little heavy at times with Vietnam-like parallels as to how the war was being handled. It’s another one of those “US Army bad, everyone else gentle and kind” movies.

The film is directed by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and adapted from a screenplay by Edwards and Chris Weitz. Amidst a future war between humans and AI, an ex-special forces agent (John David Washington) grieving the disappearance of his wife (Gemma Chan) is recruited to kill an AI architect who has developed a mysterious weapon that could end humankind.

He believes his wife was killed during a raid on an AI-friendly island where he was undercover. So deep undercover that he fell in love and had a pregnant wife. But it seems they both kept some big secrets from each other!

I went into it with no clue what it was about, and was impressed by the graphics and effects, which were all really well done. It definitely had a Terminator kind of feel to it with the AI gone bad angle. My son was captivated by the guns and explosions. There’s also spaceships and space travel giving it some Bladerunner vibes. And the usual angry US military trying to take over everything by force.

I wouldn’t rank it as one of my favorites, but it was well done and definitely worth a watch if you are into sci-fi thrillers like the ones mentioned.

  1. Great review! I missed this one when it was released in theaters, but I have a feeling that I may enjoy it. I’ve always loved dystopian sci-fi movies that make viewers think. I’m also a fan of John David Washington who has proven to be a fantastic actor. It appears as if he has inherited his legendary father’s aptitude for acting. I admired his performance in Spike Lee’s “BlackKklansman”.
