What Happens at a Silent Disco

After unknowingly wandering into a Silent Disco on Halloween and having a great time, I couldn’t wait to do another one. So, when the same bar announced they were doing their annual neon Silent Disco party last weekend, my friend Lori and I decided to go check it out.

What is a Silent Disco?

A silent disco is an event where people dance to music listened to on wireless headphones rather than through a speaker system. This allows multiple DJs to play different music at the same time, and participants can switch between channels to choose the music they want to dance to.

It creates a unique and immersive experience where everyone is dancing to their own beat, and to an outside observer there is no audible music, hence the term “silent disco.”

I love that you can change the channel when you don’t like a song, and you don’t have to shout over the music when trying to talk to someone or order a drink. But when you want the music loud, you just pop on your headphones and immerse yourself in the sound.

Preparing for the Silent Disco

I was with a big group on Halloween, and that was part of the fun, so I attempted to round up a crew again. Sometimes things just don’t work out, and every single person pooped out.

It’s incredibly hard to round up a group of over-40 women because everyone’s tired and they have family/life stuff going on and just the thought of getting dressed up and socializing can be way less appealing than staying home in your pajamas. I know, I’ve been there.

But Lori was committed, so it was still on!

I must have ordered 12 things off Amazon and returned them trying to find something neon that was also comfortable and easy to dance in. I started stressing over what the wear and how neon to go. I ended up choosing a dress with neon dinosaurs, pineapples and palm trees. And hot pink socks.

Who’s Molly?

Lori and I fueled up on espresso martinis at One Ocean and headed over to the Lemon Bar around 9PM. This is a far cry from my clubbing days, when I’d go out at 11PM. I was happy to see this crowd got started early and there was already a lot of people there and dancing.

There was a group of younger girls in front of us, and I heard the doorman tell them, “If you’re on molly, you’re going to have a great time.”

And then I felt really old, because the last time I went to a rave, they didn’t even call the stuff molly yet. And then I started to worry a bit about what we were getting into because I didn’t really want to be surrounded by a bunch of kids blowing up on X. Yes, that’s what I still call it.

But there was no turning back, so we went in, and I relaxed a bit after seeing it was a well-mixed crowd of all ages.

Dancin’ With My-se-elf

The first thing we did was purchase our headphones for $10. There is a red and blue channel, and a volume control. I really enjoy being able to control the volume and take the headset off when I don’t want music.

I remember coming home after club nights with my ears still ringing the next morning. I’m too old for that stuff now. The ringing might not stop! Got to protect the hearing so that is one big appeal to being in control of your own music.

We got ourselves a drink and headed toward the dance floor. It didn’t take long before we were both dancing around to our own music.

A silent disco is a bit like dancing with yourself, in a crowd of people. Sometimes you connect with another person, or group of people, when you can tell they are on the same station as you are. And sometimes you are just in your own head, switching stations back and forth trying to find the right song.

I liked the music better on the Halloween night, but still had fun. Both stations on this occasion were very EDM, with some hip-hop thrown in here and there. But they were really similar. On Halloween one of the channels had more old-wave and 80s playing, which is more my speed.

Lori and I danced until about 11 and that’s when the DJs started to recycle their set from earlier, pretty much in the same order. So, we called it quits, turned in our headphones and headed home.

We both had a great time and look forward to the next one!
