My Week in Review -Photography, Mom Crush, DIY Gel Nails and Something Found

This week I attended a friend’s first photography exhibit, won my friend Effie free donuts, did my own gel nails and finally found what I was looking for.

Week in Review August 13 – 19

Lions, Tigers and Cosplay! – Ok maybe not so much cosplay is on display, but definitely a good sampling of the animal kingdom is currently adorning the walls of the Adele Grage Cultural Center during my friend John Rennie’s photography exhibit. I stopped by on opening night during Art Walk artist’s reception. John may be displaying pretty animals and landscapes, but he’s also shot some of my favorite cosplay photos too!

Mom Crush Monday – When I saw the Jacksonville Mom Blog post about nominating a mom friend for “Mom Crush Monday” I knew exactly who to nominate! Effie was this Monday’s winner! She gets coffee and donuts from the Mini Bar, so you know that means we are going there to have wine and donuts! lol

If you are local, you can nominate your own Mom Crush:

DIY Gel Nails – I love having gel nails but it’s hard to get to the salon so I decided to give it a try myself. After a glass of wine, very little research and seized with an intense desire to do something about my terrible nails, I bought the Sensational Gel Starter Kit off Amazon and loved the results! (that’s an affiliate link, so Amazon will give me a few cents if you get one too) They look and feel just like the salon gels. The only issue I had was getting it too close to my cuticles. Next time I’ll keep it a little higher, but overall I was really happy!

They have that same high-shine finish that reminds me of a bowling ball. And they dry right away so no messing them up when you do then right before bed! The only thing I didn’t like was the LOUD beep from the curing light. It beeps at 30 sec. and I kept worrying it would wake up my sleeping son in the other room. Other than that, I’m loving it and will definitely be getting more colors soon!

Finding lost things – Some may think it’s silly but I do believe in the power of attraction. And when I lose things, I find if I picture finding them again, they will show up. And my necklace did! This was my favorite souvenir from our trip to Ireland and I lost it on our last day there. It was different than most of the touristy celtic knot type jewelry in every shop, and it reminded me of a mermaid tail. I was sad I lost it, but I just felt it would show up again. So a week later, while catching up on laundry, there it was in the washing machine!

That’s it for this week! Anyone else try the gel nails at home? I’d love to hear about other brands. I really didn’t look into it too much. I was in a hurry and just bought the first decently priced one that popped up and came with the light and everything! And how about the Law of Attraction aka The Secret? Anyone else practice a little of that?

My Favorite Things This Week

It’s Tuesday and I actually started this as a “things I love this week” wrap-up last Friday so that’s an indicator how my week has been going… Mother’s Day is pretty busy in the mom blog biz. Lots of activity!

So here’s a few things that I’ve been excited about this past week:

Making my gel nails last a little longer! –  I actually got this idea from a blog post on I took a way more simple approach and just used a little scotch tape and some glitter polish but had to give credit for the idea. Although I’ve gotten zero compliments, I think it looks pretty snazzy. At least it looks better than my nail polish half-way up my nail.

Before & After

Cobra Kai on YouTube Red – If you loved the Karate Kid when you were younger, you are going to love Cobra Kai! Also, you’re old! Ha, just kidding. But I’m guessing you’re over 30. I totally loved this series and actually signed up for the free trial after watching the first two free episodes. It takes place 30 years after the infamous All Valley Karate Tournament and reignites the feud between Johnny and Daniel-San.

Baking with the kiddo. I hope to be doing many more cooking posts! I love cooking and am excited my son is finally showing an interest. His interest seems rooted in sugary desserts, which are not my specialty, but I can adapt! Check out my awesome cookie-fail photos for proof. I actually just invested in some baking soda and baking powder today since it seems those are two things that keep popping up in these baking recipes. I also created a special shelf on my spice/oil rack just for these random baking requirements like vanilla extract and rainbow sprinkles. I am expanding my own skills to accommodate the toddler sweet tooth.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you momma’s out there, getting by, making it work, and rockin’ the mom thing. Hope you had a good one. Mine was…eh. Lol. I just wanted to sleep in, go to brunch and have mimosas and then take a nap. My husband was not on board with the sleeping in plan and proceeded to let our son have a screaming tantrum in his room right across from our’s without even bothering to shut our bedroom door. When I complained, I got a crappy “He’s 3, what can I do about it?” response. While there are many things I wanted to tell him he could go do…I just grabbed K and put him in bed with me until he stopped crying. Way to mom it up on Mother’s Day right? I did eventually get my mimosas and a nap so I won’t hold a grudge, although I am seriously considering staying in a hotel next Mother’s Day eve and then meeting up with the family for brunch. I think a night and morning to myself sounds divine. Also, I was the only one who tried to get any photos so here’s my awesome selfie that really sums up my day:

Nap time! And finally, my favorite thing that has happened TWICE in the past week is the super elusive magical nap experience. This is something I took for granted back in early toddler-hood. Then it was taken away suddenly when my son just started refusing to nap. I miss it SO BAD. I used to get stuff done during nap time. As soon as he went down I’d spring into action and get a million things done. Now when it happens I feel like getting on my hand and knees and thanking God and shouting halleluja and I’m not even a religious person.

So that’s the highlights of my past week! How was your’s?

Stuff I’m Loving This Month – April

I wanted to start doing a weekly wrap-up of stuff that wasn’t getting a full blog post, but was worthy of a mention. And then I was like, “Who am I kidding? WEEKLY?, lol. So I decided to do a monthly thing. I know it isn’t quite the end of the month yet, but let’s not get too picky.

So here’s the first official installment of: Stuff I’m Loving this Month

1 – My fabulous gel nails! I have never had polish last this long. I’m a nibbler and a picker, so polish lasts me maybe a day. This stuff literally last two weeks with NO chips. I’m really living have pretty nails. The color is Show Me Your Tips by OPI. And if you are local, they do a great job at Bella Nails.

2 – My new cup that keeps ice in it for days! I was a little jealous of my husband’s fancy Yeti cup. Then I got the Rettebovon stainless steel cup off Amazon for a fraction of the price and it works great! It came with an optional handle, two different style lids and straws too. I think it’s neat to wake up and still have ice in my nighttime water glass. And it doesn’t sweat and make a drippy mess.

3 – Keelan’s new shirt from It’s cute and beachy and 100% American made. Use code GEEKMAMAS20 for 20% off

4 – Sushi! Who am I kidding? Sushi could be on here every time. I love sushi! This week we tried out a place that just opened at Neptune Beach called Kamiya 86. The rainbow martini was delicious!

5 – My pic for the Jacuzzi bath salts that came in my Mom Life Vox Box from Influenster. I really think this is my favorite #momlife pic ever, lol. Although I do really miss my relaxing bath time and my old bathtub. Our new house just has this one small tub. Hoping to change that in the future!

And that wraps up my favorite things this month! Feel free to share what you’re loving right now 🙂
