Geek of the Week: Maddie Morrow from Temple of Geek

We’re starting the week off with our Geek of the Week, Maddie Morrow, a writer and editor at Temple of Geek and geek fashion aficionado.

Please introduce yourself:

My name is Maddie. I am a lead writer and the deputy editor of Temple of Geek. Cosplay and geek fashion are two of my most favorite things! Also, I am currently going back to school for my degree in Communications.

What do you geek out on?

I geek out on Doctor Who, Marvel, Star Wars, cosplay and geek-inspired fashion.

Now that we know what makes you a Geek, what makes you a Mama?

I am the mama of an almost 6-year-old boy. He is insanely smart, loves to learn and he enjoys watching Doctor Who with me.

Marvel or DC? and Why?

Marvel has always appealed more to me. I am not a heavy comic book reader (although I am trying to read more!), so the Marvel films for me are lighter and more fun. I can relate to the characters more in the Marvel universe versus the DC universe.

Star Wars or Star Trek? and Why?

Star Wars flows through my veins! My fondest memories are watching the Original Trilogy films on VHS with my dad. Then, I grew up going to the theaters so see the prequels and being so enthralled with the whole universe. I have made some new and incredible friends through our love of Star Wars. Also, cosplaying characters from the Star Wars universe is so much fun!

Favorite video game now, or as a kid, or both if you are a long-time gamer:

My favorite game as a kid was Star Fox 64! Now, it’s a tie between Animal Crossing and World of Warcraft. It depends on if I want to relax and be at peace or destroy my enemies!

Were you a geeky kid or did you come into it later in life?

I feel like I was always a geek, but it was not main-stream when I was a kid. I would rather play video games and watch Star Wars than go play outside. As an adult, it isn’t so taboo or weird to be a geek. Honestly, I wish I would have embraced it more growing up.

Have you ever cosplayed as a favorite character?

Yes! I currently cosplay the Thirteenth Doctor, and she holds such a special place in my hearts. (See what I did there?)

What is your favorite geeky event you’ve attended or would like to go to?

Gallifrey One is by far the best geeky event ever! It’s a smaller, more intimate convention that is all about Doctor Who. The community is so special and the guests are always incredible. Plus, you can cosplay obscure characters from the series and everyone knows who you are!

Are you working on anything right now you’d like to share or promote?

I currently host the Temple of Geek Cosplay Connection! I am doing my best to interview a cosplayer every month. It’s a time to get to know cosplayers and their journeys. It’s such a great time.
