Yesterday was World Kindness Day, and we celebrated with a new subscription box called Tiny Values. Each box focuses on teaching children an important value, and this one was all about kindness. Values are Skills that Require Practice
If it’s one thing I’ve learned as a mom to a wild little boy, it’s that values need to be taught and practiced. And practiced again! And while some kids may just naturally be kind or courageous or thankful, I’m finding these are things that I have to keep going over and over while trying to raise a decent little human being. His natural instinct leans more toward destruction and mayhem, so I can use all the help I can get when it comes to teaching values.
Tiny Values is a social-emotional learning curriculum in a box. It comes with everything you need to teach your children values like gratitude, empathy and patience. The monthly subscription box is aimed at 5 – 10-year-olds, and each kit comes with a book, two hand-on projects, discussion cards, a poster to track your progress, a workbook to guide you and a surprise toy when they complete the lesson.
Our Tiny Values Experience
We had fun with opening this box and doing the projects inside. My son was excited and drawn in by the fun set-up, stickers and projects. And boy did he want to know what was in the little surprise box! He immediately identified with the book included, Have You Filled Your Bucket Today?, because they practice that same concept in his 1st grade classroom. They all have buckets, and when they do something nice they put little sticks in it. When their bucket gets filled, they get a surprise from the toy chest. It’s great motivation to do nice things.
His favorite activity was making the little kindness bags to give to friends. He couldn’t wait to go hand them out, so we went on a walk to pass them out and visit neighbors. So the experience even got me out and being more kind and neighborly. His least favorite activity was the discussion cards, because while I can hear him loudly squealing and talking non-stop right now to the dog, trying to ask him a question about anything usually results in a deer-in-the-headlights type stare and a quiet squeak of an answer. But we did get through them! And maybe he learned a little bit about what it means to be kind from it all.
Values that Last a Lifetime
Sometimes you wonder if things stick with kids, and I can honestly say this one stuck, because as I’m sitting here typing this, I can hear my son telling his dad all about the neat box we opened yesterday. He told him about the book, the activities and of course, the surprise toy at the end! There’s nothing kids love better than a surprise toy.
