Geek of the Week: Cosplayer Meg Long

This week our Geek of the Week is Meg Long, also known as @mobilegemcosplay on Instagram. She’s a mom and mental health counselor by day, and costumed superhero by night (and weekends!). She has at least 30 cosplays, with no plans to stop anytime soon.

Please introduce yourself:

I am a geeky mom. I work as a mental health counselor during the day and in the evenings and weekends, I act in community theater and work on my cosplays. I am 50 years old this year, but I don’t think I’ll ever grow up. I have just moved back to the United States after living in Belgium and Korea for the past 14 years.

What do you geek out on?

I love movies. Star Wars and superhero movies are my favorites. I am a cosplayer. I own WAY too many, but I’m most proud of my Harley Quinn hammer that I foamsmithed from scratch. I play video games and act in theater. I send Grogu and dogs wearing hats memes to my friends.

Do you have any children?

I have a 14 year old son, Declan, who is almost as geeky as me. My four legged children are Dug, a golden retriever, and cat, Dora.

Marvel or DC? and Why?

I like watching the Marvel movies. And I love cosplaying from DC. I loved the new Batman movie, but Spider-Man No Way Home was the greatest ending of a trilogy, a trilogy of trilogies. In all, Marvel wins out since the beginning of my geekiness was the X-men.

Star Wars or Star Trek? and Why?

Star Wars will always be my first love, but I appreciate Star Trek and its importance to our lives today. I wouldn’t be filling this form out on my phone if it wasn’t for Star Trek. Transporters are just around the corner. Star Wars, specifically the original trilogy, will always be my favorite.

Favorite video game now, or as a kid, or both if you are a long-time gamer.

I have always loved the Final Fantasy series. I’ve been playing faithfully since 7 first came out. 10 was my favorite. Recently, I’ve loved Subnautica. I’ve replayed it multiple times whenever I need to get away.

Were you a geeky kid or did you come into it later in life?

I have always been a little geeky, but it is something that I have definitely grown into. It takes a lot of inner strength to be authentically oneself.

Have you ever cosplayed as a favorite character?

I have about 25-30 cosplays. (Follow me on @mobilegemcosplay) My favorite is Harley Quinn, so I can show off my hammer. My newest is Scarlet Witch. I still want to hand make my Mandalorian armor.

What is your favorite geeky event you’ve attended or would like to go to?

I would love to attend the holy grail of the San Diego Comic-Con. I loved Elftopia in Belgium.

Are you working on anything right now you’d like to share or promote?

I am always working on new cosplays. Since I’m new back to the Pacific Northwest, I am looking for cosplay groups to collaborate with.
