A couple Halloweens ago I did a full DIY tutorial on making a magic staff using a big stick, and I used glow sticks for the green glow. This year I’m upgrading my Maleficent staff with LED lights! I’ll be wearing this cosplay at Enchantment Con in May and I wanted to add a few new features. I get bored of wearing the same exact costume and always have to switch things up a bit!
Maleficient Staff Gets a Glow Up
The lights I added were $9 for a pack of 12 LED lights, and they come in several color options. You can also get ones that blink on and off. They come with batteries inside, and you open them up to remove a little piece of paper that blocks the connection. After that you can turn them on and off by twisting the base. These lights are often used for lighting up balloons. Click here to see the LED lights on Amazon.

I haven’t tested out how long the lights last, but with a pack of 12, I figure I’ll bring extra and replace as needed. The LEDs are much easier than the glow sticks I was using before, and much brighter. I’m pretty excited about the literal glow up!
My Maleficent costume obviously isn’t a copy of the movie version. I often prefer to make up my own versions of characters. This one is a mix of Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent and Kristne Bauer’s on Once Upon a Time.
