Sometimes you just gotta getaway, so a couple friends and I did a girl’s weekend in Savannah, GA and managed to pack a lot of activities in the 3-day weekend due to the Memorial Day holiday.

What to Do for a Weekend in Savannah

We spent our stay at the Alida Hotel, which is a Marriot Tribute Portfolio Hotel and located in a great spot downtown and close to many shops, activities and places to eat.

Visit the Bonaventure Cemetery

Bonaventure Cemetery is renowned for its historical significance, stunning natural beauty, and captivating Southern Gothic charm. It shot to fame when the “Bird Girl” statue was featured on the cover of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, by John Berendt.

The statue has since been moved to the Telfair Museums to preserve it, but there is still plenty to see! The grounds are beautiful and peaceful, with walkways shaded by huge oak trees and Spanish moss. There are many notable people buried there and a lot of history.

Visitors can explore Bonaventure Cemetery on their own or through guided tours that provide insights into the cemetery’s history, notable residents, and the symbolism behind its statues and monuments. I really wish we had set up a tour, but it was still fun to wander around a take in the sites.

You can stop at the entrance and get a free map to help navigate the massive cemetery and locate some of the more notable gravesites.

Take a Ghost Tour

I feel like no girl’s weekend in Savannah would be complete without a ghost tour! Savannah is rich with history and historical buildings, so of course it is filled with ghost stories. You can always find out the most interesting bits of history about places when you do the ghosts tours.

We did two different ghost tours- a walking pub crawl ghost tour with Guy in the Kilt and the hearse tour with Hearse Ghost Tours.

A Ghost Tour in a Real Hearse

By far the most fun tour was the one in the hearse. The back is converted into an open-air seating area with a roof. You do get a breeze driving around, so it was not as hot as I was expecting.

The driver has a sense of humor about the whole thing and plays fun “driving around town in a hearse” music. He was also a good storyteller and wove bits of history in with local legends.

The fun thing about the hearse tour is that you feel like you are in a parade. Every time we’d stop, people would point and wave!

Guy in the Kilt Ghost Tour

You’ll see many massive walking tours going on in Savannah, so one advantage of the Guy in the Kilt tours is that the group is much smaller. Ours had five people in it, compared to the 40 or so we saw parading by.

We went with the pub crawl option, but it wasn’t really much of a pub crawl and just involved a stop at a random bar to get a drink to start, and then we ended at a bar. There wasn’t much of a crawl and there were any ghost stories about the bars. I’ve been on ghost pub crawls in St. Augustine and London, and in both we visited places that had great history and we were told stories about the location. This is not that kind of tour.

I would only recommend going with Guy in the Kilt if you have already done the other ghost tours and are looking for another angle or story. I was really glad I’d already heard all the history from our trolley ride and hearse tour, because Guy in the Kilt was light on history but heavy on debunking all the stories I’d heard earlier.

You also don’t need to book the pub crawl tour- just grab yourself a drink to bring with you before your tour. There aren’t any drink specials or perks for being part of the tour. In fact, the getting drinks part at the beginning took about 30 minutes and wasted a lot of time.

He’s very serious about his paranormal research and work and spends a lot of the time explaining how the other companies are doing it wrong. He does have a lot of enthusiasm for sharing his research and personal stories about the local hauntings, but I didn’t feel like there were enough ghosts for me on this ghost tour.

Enjoy the Savannah Nightlife

We wanted to get out and enjoy the Savannah nightlife on our girl’s getaway, so we stayed up past our bedtime and checked out the local clubs and evening entertainment.

A Speakeasy with Burlesque Show

Our first stop was the Mata Hari speakeasy featuring a burlesque show by the Downtown Delilahs. These girls put on quite a show! I don’t have any photos because cameras are not allowed at the burlesque show.

If you purchase tickets to the show, then you get automatic entry into the speakeasy. It’s located within walking distance from the Alida, and down a scary dark alley. The bar is definitely worth a visit!

We walked up to the The Crypt Club, thinking we might have found a good goth club based on the name and decor. We were sadly mistaken and were greeted with the sounds of booty music pumping from the packed dance floor.

It was a fun crowd to watch though, and there was even a cosplay themed bachelorette party in attendance. We had one drink before heading out to Club One.

We had high expectations from Club One, home of the famous Lady Chablis who played herself in the movie version of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

My friend Heather had reserved the VIP booth, which was a row of seats set up high to the side of the stage. You actually have a better view in the regular seating area, as the VIP area is too high up to even hand the performers dollars.

Maybe it was an off night, or maybe it was because it was the midnight show, but these queens were dragging and not in a good way. There was very little crowd interaction, and they were out on stage about two seconds before they just wandered around lip synching while taking dollars.

There were a few who had some energy and gave it a good try, but honestly this was one of the most lackluster drag shows I’ve ever attended.

Pet all the Kitties

One of the unique activities we did was visit Pounce Cat Cafe and Wine Bar, where you can sip wine and pet cats. Reservations are recommended, but you can also walk-in and see if they have space available as attendance is limited.

You’ll get about an hour to pet and play with the cats, which are all available for adoption. If you get the Cat Whisperer package, you also get a cat toy to take home and treats for the cats.

Shop and Wander

There are so many pretty squares to wander through and shops to visit, that we spent a lot of time walking around. There are some really unique shops, and at one of them we are had our tarot cards read.

We also visited art galleries, and even got to try out a swing while enjoying the air conditioner. Savannah is hot!

I don’t even think I covered all the things we did on our three-day girl’s weekend in Savannah, but I did manage to hit a lot of the highlights. It’s a very fun city to visit, with lots of things to do.
