The first Geek of the Week for 2021 also happens to be a long-time friend of mine, from way back in the early days of cosplay. I met Victoria Avalor through a mutual affinity for dressing like Slave Leia and gathering in groups at conventions like SDCC and DragonCon. She also modeled corsets and costumes for my store when I had a costume shop. Now you can find her writing books, studying Egyptology and playing part-time princess when she’s not teaching her preschool class.
Please introduce yourself:
Hi! I’m Victoria Avalor and I have been cosplaying since 2006. I work full-time as a preschool teacher in the Montgomery County area of Pennsylvania. I am the author of 2 ebooks, Realm of Lore and An Unholy Union (available on Amazon). I have been working as a professional princess performer at children’s parties for 5 years. I have also modeled professionally and was published in print nationally in Latina Magazine. * Click here to check out Victoria’s author page on Amazon to see her books!
What do you geek out on?
Lots of things! I am an avid doll collector so I geek out over any new dolls hitting the market and also, collecting older dolls that are no longer made. I love Marvel movies and have seen them all. I can’t wait for the next one to be released! I am a big fan of Disney and love Disney animated films. I am going through The Mandalorian withdrawal! The show is so well done and is the best thing Disney has done since buying the Star Wars property. I tend to geek out over photo shoots, both cosplay and fashion. I love working with professional photographers and seeing what kind of art we can create together!
Now that we know what makes you a Geek, what makes you a Mama?
*We define “Mama” as someone who cares for something. It can be a human, animal, plant…almost everyone tends to the needs of someone or something they love.
I love this question! Working as a full time preschool teacher, I definitely feel like a Mama of sorts to all of my students, whom I lovingly refer to as “my kids.” I am not only responsible for caring for their daily needs but also, their education. It is an exhausting job but very gratifying! It’s extraordinary to watch them learn and grow. The hugs and kisses are the best!
Marvel or DC? and Why?
Growing up I was definitely more of a DC fan. DC had a bigger presence in media (cartoons, movies) in the ’80s and ’90s than Marvel did. Since characters like Wonder Woman, Superman and Batman were the first superheroes I was exposed to, I became attached to them very early on in my life. However, that has changed drastically in the last 10 years with Marvel Studios. The quality of their Cinematic Universe is outstanding. I have been introduced to so many amazing characters and gone on thrilling adventures with the Marvel films. Endgame really tugged at my heart strings. I consider myself a Marvel fan now. The studio has better storytelling than films made by Warner Brothers/DC and Marvel isn’t afraid to bring a massive variety of different characters on screen.
Star Wars or Star Trek? and Why?
I truly love both, however, I cannot keep up with all of the new Star Trek television shows that come out. I am much more versed in the Star Wars Universe. Princess Leia was the first princess I ever saw that was kicking butt and taking names. My brother and I shared a passion for Star Wars growing up and we still do to this day. I love both franchises but my heart is with Star Wars.
Favorite video game now, or as a kid, or both if you are a long-time gamer:
As a kid, I loved the video games Double Dragon, Streets of Rage II and later, the Tomb Raider series. Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts are also on my list! I am currently playing Little Nightmares courtesy of my little sisters XBox. LOL
Were you a geeky kid or did you come into it later in life?
I was always a geek, always a nerd. I got bullied greatly for it in school. It wasn’t cool back then especially for a non-white girl. I remember back then they didn’t make comic book themed shirts for women so, I had to shop in the boys section!
Have you ever cosplayed as a favorite character?
Yes, most definitely! Belle is my favorite Disney Princess. I have not only cosplayed her but I have been booked to perform as Belle at parties. Wonder Woman is another favorite of mine although her costume isn’t very comfortable. LOL. I would like to cosplay Captain Marvel next as I loved her film!
What is your favorite convention to attend?
Wow, it’s been so long because of Covid that I’m not sure what the answer is! I will probably say San Diego Comic- Con although it’s been several years since I worked there.
Are you working on anything right now you’d like to share?
Not on the cosplay front however personally, I am taking a course in Egyptology through the Centre of Excellence.
